sightseeing of the city (by coach) to discover:
The train station and Town Hall, very beautiful XIXth c. buildings designed by
Victor Laloux; the banks of the Loire river (lovely view of the river); the "Château
Royal" with theTour de Guise (XIIIth c) crowned with machicolation and a
pepper-pot roof; the "Saint-Gatien Cathedral", built from the XIIIth to
the XVIth century. and showing the complete development of the French Gothic style (stop);
the Archbishops' Palace (XVIIth XVIIIth c); you will walk in the French
style garden, lovely views of the palace façade and cathedral towers; the Wilson
Bridge (XVIIIth c) also known as the Stone Bridge.
A walking tour to
discover the area known as "Old Tours" (formerly called Chateauneuf village),
now one of the city curiosities with its narrow, often pedestrian streets and numerous
XVth and XVIth c. timber-framed houses. You will discover the famous place Plumereau
which displays a fine group of timber- framed dwellings, and the Charlemagne Tower
which used to be part of the Saint-Martin collegiate church, and the new Saint-Martin
Basilica, a beautiful XIXth c. church in which the grave and relics of Saint Martin
are still visible. You will stroll along the picturesque medieval streets, where numerous
shops still offer their rich crafts. Admire the façade of the Pierre Dupuy Mansion
(XVth c.), the Saint-Pierre-le-Puellier garden
(Gallo-Roman ruins), staircases towers in the rue de la Rôtisserie... |
